WEEPING WATER WRESTLING
A strong tradition of winning and excellence has entered its seventh decade of competition with continued consistency of success and achievement. Since 1968, the wrestling program at Weeping Water High School has afforded student-athletes the opportunity to experience the many benefits from this rugged sport called wrestling. Included in these opportunities are the shared experiences of commitment, discipline, belief, courage, sacrifice, camaraderie, strong work ethic, and most importantly the firsthand experience of realizing hard work always pays off in the end. Some wrestlers have achieved the ultimate success of being a state champion, some have been state qualifiers, and others have just been part of the team. But in the end, every young grappler has benefited from wrestling in the preparation for life through strength of body, toughness of mind, and fixity of purpose. The long-term benefits of wrestling far outweigh the immediate levels of success each wrestler may experience. That is what is so great about this sport.
The rich history of Weeping Water Wrestling has been preserved; from the very first state qualifier in 1968, Ron Baxter, to the last state champion in 2021, Nolan Blevins. In this time, Weeping Water has sent 244 individual wrestlers to the state tournament. Of these state qualifiers, a total of 83 medals have been brought back to Weeping Water including 13 State Championships. In addition to the individual wrestlers having tremendous successes, the teams Weeping Water has produced have been equally impressive. In 2000, Weeping Water brought its first school State Championship home. The 1980 team finished runner-up in state in Class C and the 1982 team finished third in Class C. Overall, Weeping Water has fielded teams that have finished in the top 15 at state eighteen different times.
